Finalist for the Teacher of Excellence award, Phyllis Brown has published teaching kits, drama, poetry, and her Master’s Degree thesis entitled Narratives of Enslaved People: Lifting the Veil, Resisting the Peculiar Institution. Her five book series, The Gold-Banded Box received the Outstanding Fiction Award at the Southern California Writers’ Conference. (50 words)

 

Phyllis has published poetry, two African American Literature and Cultural Activities Kits for Educators, grades K-3, 4-6; and her Master’s Degree thesis entitled: Narratives of Enslaved People: Lifting the Veil, Resisting the Peculiar Institution. A play she directed, entitled O Freedom!, was performed in several California venues. She loves to travel researching places in the literature she teaches and writes about. Phyllis has visited 39 countries, a third of them in Africa. A speaker, California Literature Consultant, and finalist for Teacher of Excellence, her historical fiction series, The Gold-Banded Box received the Outstanding Fiction award at the Southern California Writers’ Conference. Phyllis J. Brown has inspired students since she was four, playing school. After attaining a B.A. in Spanish, she married, and taught second grade until the births of a son, then a daughter. After several years, she returned to her career, earned four credentials, an M.A. in English with a focus on African American Literature, and she taught over 31 years in the classroom before retiring. Phyllis has published two African American Literature and Cultural Activities Kits for Educators, grades K-3 and 4-6; poetry, her Master’s Degree thesis entitled: Narratives of Enslaved People: Lifting the Veil, Resisting the Peculiar Institution; and a play, O Freedom!, which she also directed, which was performed in several California venues.  Author and speaker, Phyllis loves to travel to settings of the literature she teaches her students. She has visited 39 countries, a third of them in Africa. Phyllis is a California Literature Consultant, who was honored to be a finalist for Teacher of Excellence.
